Shane Graham's first exposure to a musical instrument was with the guitar at the age of 12. Not immediately drawn to it, he put it down, but would later reconnect with it. A year later, he discovered the drums and instantly fell in love. Shane initially taught himself by playing along to Nirvana and other Alternative and Classic Rock records. He formed his first rock band in high school while also playing in Marching Band and Drum Line. After graduating high school, he began his first formal drum lessons with the great Jack LeCompte, concentrating on the fundamentals of Jazz.
Shane received his BA in Music Industry Studies from California State University, Northridge, graduating with Honors on the Dean’s List with a cumulative GPA of 3.7. While at CSUN, he studied percussion under Aaron Smith, John Roscigno, and Jerry Steinholtz. It was during college that his technical knowledge of music was developed, including fluency in reading music, music theory, harmony, and musicianship. He simultaneously began playing the piano and developed a passion for composing. In addition, he studied the drums privately with Jason Harnell and Gene Coye, focusing on improvisation and Jazz. After college, he studied with Bruce Becker, a master of technique and protégé of Freddie Gruber. From these lessons, Shane became inspired to become a teacher himself.
Shane has been providing drum lessons for over 14 years and has taught kids, teens, and adults privately, in groups, and at numerous music schools throughout Los Angeles.
With an outstanding reputation as a session drummer, Shane is frequently requested to work with bands in the Los Angeles music scene and abroad. His credits include performances and recordings with Dream Phases, Supergloom, Jeff Schroeder, Peter Hook, Mark Lanegan, Draag, The Blank Tapes, Tony Malacara, Billy Changer, Cullen Omori, Korey Dane, and more. He has performed all across the United States, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe. He has shared the stage with artists such as The Growlers, Broncho, Luna, Frankie & the Witchfingers, Wooden Shjips, Sugar Candy Mountain, The Asteroid # 4, LSD and the Search for God, and Levitation Room.
Desiring to play a bigger role in the album-making process, he taught himself how to mix audio during the pandemic. His mixing credits include Dream Phases "New Distractions" LP, "Supergloom EP", their latest singles 'Kingfisher' and 'sidefx', and Gregg Garvey's 'Woodsmoke'. He specializes in mixing Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Psychedelic Rock, Alternative, and Indie Rock.
Shane is currently active with his two bands, Dream Phases and Supergloom.
